Section Pinnatae R.Knuth included species P. cicutariifolia, P. filchnerae, P. merrilliana and P. erodioides however more recent observations of P. filchnerae showed that it belong instead in section Auganthus. As this species was the type for the section, a new sectional name , section Ranunculoides, was named by C.M.Hu with the type P. cicutariifolia. This section is characterized by highly divided pinnate, glabrous leaves, and the calyx not inflated at the base. All species are from Eastern China. A good key is provided in the paper describing P. jiugongshanensis.
