Type specimen: K.K.Tsoong 3290 resides at B (still exists?) and PE (specimen PE02054416), NAS (specimen NAS00072108) and E (specimen E00024344).

Epithet: Named for E.D. Merrill.
Distribution: Anhui, China.

A biennial species with glabrous, pinnatisect leaves and heterostylous flowers. Found growing in small isolated patches such as road sides, ditch banks and tilth sides. Differs from related P. cicutariifolia in having more pinnae, usually 2 or 3 umbels and corolla lobes elliptical to oval with a rounded apex.
