Considered by Halda to be a subspecies of P. obconica and related by Hu with P. wangii and P. kwangtungensis. This species differs from P. obconica in having small, white, monomorphic flowers, a short corolla tube (1.3X the calyx) and triangular calyx-lobes. The capsule is calyptrate which distinguishes it from species in section Obconicolisteri. C.M.Hu inadvertently redescribed this species under the name P. larsenii.
