Epithet: Named for the plant origin in China.
Distribution: Sichuan.
P. praenitens is well known under the name P. sinensis, but that name is illegitimate. See an explanation of this. A proposal to conserve the name P. sinensis has been made but has not yet been accepted at this time. It is close to the species P. rupestris, but apparently distinct by location, being sparsely pubescent (vs sparsely villous), leaf lobes with coarse teeth (vs rounded) and leaf abaxial surface purplish-red. The original plants which were used to describe this species were from cultivation. Leaves are broadly ovate to subrotund, base cordate, and palmately lobed with the margin coarsely dentate to incised-lobulate. Scapes have 1-3 whorls of pink to lilac or white flowers. Calyx is inflated at the base. Plant is covered in multicellular hairs which may cause an allergic reation.
