P. farinosa L. subsp. yuparensis (Takeda): Kitam., Acta Phytotax. Geobot. 17: 13. 1957.

Epithet: Named for Mount Yūbari.
Distribution: Mount Yūbari, Japan.

This species is endemic to Mount Yūbari, Japan. It grows on serpentine soils. It is similar to P. farinosa though it has larger flowers and a very long corolla tube. It is also related to P. modesta, though it has much shorter petioles, usually fewer, much larger flowers. See also related P. sorachiana. Leaves 1.5-3cm long, oblanceolate or subelliptic, rounded or obtuse at the apex, very short winged petiole, minutely denticulate at the margin, efarinose above, sparcely white farinose becoming subefarinose. Scape 4-6cm, farinose near the apex, with 2-5 purple flowers, bracts shortly saccate at the base, tube 12-14mm. In cultivation, may be confused with P. halleri, which also has long corolla tubes, but it is from Europe, grows on limestone soils, is covered under the leaves with dense yellowish/creamy farina, and has a taller scape, 8-18cm and more flowers per scape.
