Link to Flora of China description P. anisodora is considered a distinct species from P. wilsonii by the Flora of China, whereas John Richards considers it a variety of P. wilsonii. Wu Zhukin has studied plants in the wild and has concluded the two may belong to a complex of plants. P. wilsonii hybridizes with P. prolifera (P. X anisodoxa), P. poissonii and P. secundiflora.
