The names P. virginis and P. leimonophila were published in the same year, but P. virginis has priority. This species is very similar to P. amethystina but distinguished by the lanceolate, acute leaves, by the purple colored calyx and by the oblong corolla lobes. May actually fall within the variation of P. amethystina and may be better placed as a subspecies.
