Primula vilmoriniana was initially compared with P. obconica but differing by its very large leaves, strongly veined, with very prominent veins on the underside, very small flowers (5-6 mm) in a dense, simple umbel, with hairy pedicels, as well as a calyx that is barely parted. P. vilmoriniana is a very hairy species, leaves broadly ovate to subroundate, rounded at the apex, cordate at the base, slightly undulate and entire or faintly denticulate at the margin. Petiole short, distinct. Flowers rose colored on hairy pedicels, tube 1.5 X the calyx which is parted to 1/4 into broadly triangular hydathode-apiculate lobes. P. subtropica was assigned to section Carolinella when described. The images below are from the type location of P. subtropica.
