P. tongolensis is a dwarf, glabrous species that grows at high elevations of 4000-4500m. It has a seed capsule which disintergrates at maturity and so is placed in section Petiolares. Leaves appear with the flowers and bud scales are evident. The leaf blade is fleshy, broadly spathulate, base tapering to the petiole, apex rounded and margin entire or subentire. Scape is obsolete, bracts absent, pedicels 1-4 per plant. Calyx broadly tubular to tubular-campanulate, parted to nearly middle, lobes ovate, rounded at apex and imbricate. Corolla is bluish-violet, exannulate, lobes oblong-obovate to oblanceolate, entire or slightly emarginate. Tube 2x the calyx and lined with hairs.
