Type specimen: Hort from seeds of E. Wilson 1904 resides at Kew (specimen K000750181)
Type of P. tangutica var serrata : Rock 12612 resides at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimen E00024261) This is a form of P. tangutica with coarsely serrated leaves.
Type of P. silenantha (Syn): Limpricht 1773 resides at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimen E00024605) This is a dwarf form of P. tangutica.

P. tangutica is wide spread through S Gansu, E Qinghai, Sichuan and E Tibet. It varies in color from very dark red to pink. Yellow (and pink) forms are P. tangutica var flavescens (type from near Chamdo, E Tibet). Notable for the linear corolla lobes which are strong reflexed.
