Type specimen: Ludlow & Sherriff 1912 resides at British Museum (specimen BM000996902) and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimens E00024521, E00024522).

Epithet: Named for the subulate (slender) leaves.
Distribution: Arunachal Pradesh, Tibet.

Primula subularia has been collected only a few times on the Lo La pass which is on the border between Tibet and Arunachal Pradesh and on the nearby Shenjong La, Tibet. It grows on wet rocks forming moss-like clumps only 2cm tall. The corolla is purplish pink with a wine red reverse, exannulate, monomorphic and the lobes are semi-patent, more in line with the tube. The tube is wine red on the outside and there are white hairs in the throat. Easily distinguished by the linear entire leaves.
