Two subspecies are currently recongized: P. sonchifolia ssp sonchifolia and P. sonchifolia ssp emeiensis which has deeply cut pinnate leaves. This species is found through North Burma, NW Yunnan to West Sichuan. It is quite variable, as the number of synonyms attest, but it is distinguished by the shallowly lobed calyx.
