This species was described from plants cultivated by Veitch & Sons from seeds collected at Taochow in Western Gansu by William Purdom. It has been compared to P. woodwardii but distinguished by corolla lobes oval, with a subtle veining on each lobe (see type drawing) and often the same color as the tube. Leaves are lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute or obtuse at the apex, sheathing at the base and farinose or almost efarinose below with a prominent midrib. Scape far exceed the leaves, farinose at the apex and carries 8-12 rosy-lilac to purple flowers in a single umbel. The calyx is tubular-campanulate, farinose inside and parted to the middle in to oblong-lanceolate lobes, subobtuse at the apex.
