Type specimen: Cult. from Wilson resides at KEW (specimens K000732863, K000732864, K000732865). Syntype specimens: Henry 8879, Pratt 356 resides at KEW.

P. shihmienensis (syn): W. P. Fang, Acta Sci. Nat. Univ. Szechuan. 1956(1): 103. Type specimen: Hsieh 40238, 40320, 41243 resides at Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences , Beijing (specimens PE 00027746, PE 00027754) and at Northwestern Institute of Botany, Yangling, Shaanxi (specimens WUK 0176865, WUK 0286528).

Epithet: Named for the farina on the inflorescence.
Distribution: W Sichuan, China.

A large candelabra type Primula species, with carmine-red flowers with a darker (but not yellow) eye borne in whorls on stems to 100 cm. Stem is white mealy as are the pedicels and calyx. Leaves obovate or oblanceolate to 30cm long, round at the apex, tapering to a winged petiole at the base, irregularly dentate at the margin. This species is one parent of several hybrids which results in plants of various shades from white, through pink and salmon. P. X chunglenta (P. chungensis x P. pulverulenta) is formerly described. See related P. beesiana (some authorities refer to this as P. bulleyana subsp. beesiana).
