Type specimen: Delavay s.n. (Juin 1882) and 120 (11 Juillet 1883) resides at P (specimens P00649672, P04544608, P04544625) and E (specimens E00265005, E00265006).
P. x dschungdienensis Hand.-Mazz. (hybrid P. poissonii x P. secundiflora): Type specimen: Handel-Mazzettii 4623 resides at WU (specimen WU0059711).
P. planiflora Hand.-Mazz. (syn): Type specimen: (syntypes) Handel-Mazzettii 3045, 4116, 4624 and Forrest 355, 1819, 2120 resides at WU (specimens WU0059717, WU0059718, WU0059719).
Epithet: Named for Jules Poisson.
Distribution: Yunnan, Sichuan.
A glabrous, efarinose, non-aromatic species with oblong-obovate to oblanceloate leaves, rounded at the apex, strongly tapering to the base into a petiole which is broadly winged or indistinct, and margin regularly denticulate. Scape to 45cm, with 2-6 whorls of deep purple-crimson, strongly annulate flowers with spreading limbs and a yellow eye. Calyx campanulate, often covered with reddish striae, cut to 1/3 into triangular to oblong lobes, apex obtuse. Bracts are linear-lanceolate, pedicels 1-2cm and tightly adpressed to the scape when in fruit. White forms are known. See related species P. stenodonta and P. wilsonii.
