Type specimen: Forrest 22073, Forrest 22452 resides at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimens E00284620,E00024112 ) and US National Herbarium (specimen US00116495) and KEW (specimen K000732826) and Paris (specimen P04567152) and British Museum (specimen BM000996815).

P. pauliana var. huiliensis: C. M. Hu in Chen & C. M. Hu, Fl. Reipubl. Popularis Sin. 59(2): 290. 1990. Type specimen: Sichuan Vegitation Exped. 12095 resides at South China Botanical Garden, Guangdong and Chengdu Institute of Biology. A purple-rose colored variant.

Epithet: Named for Rev. David Paul, an enthusiastic student of European Primulaceae.
Distribution: Sichuan and N Yunnan, China.

P. pauliana is distinguished by yellow flowers arranged in a racemose inflorescence which resembles members of Section Malvacea. A more recently described P. pauliana var huiliensis has rose-purple flowers and is found in Huili County, Sichuan (Deping, Malong). The capsule exceeds the calyx and is curved at the apex which is unusual. This species is quite distinct and may require its own Section.
