Primula nipponica Yatabe, Bot. Mag. (Tokyo) 4: 3. 1890, t. 13 et Icon. Fl. Jap. i. I. (1891)35, t. 15. 1890.

Type specimen: Yatabe & Okubo s.n. Mt. Chokaizan, 1887? resides at University of Tokyo? and KEW (specimen K000732820).

Epithet: Old name for Japan.
Distribution: Honshu, Japan.

A species endemic to northern Honshu, Japan. Very close to P. cuneifolia but white flowered, slender and smaller. The pin form has the stigma exerted. Leaves are a characteristic shape for the Section being obovate-cuneate, and with a dentate margin in the upper part. Yatabe does not specify exactly which is considered the type collection nor where it is stored so the specimen cited is provisional.
