P. listeri is part of the P. obconica complex. It can be distinguished from the related P. sinolisteri by distribution and from P. filipes by the leaf shape. Sometimes confused with P. geraniifolia of section Cortusoides, but P. listeri has a widely campanulate calyx. Homomorphic. The protologue written by Hooker (from King's manuscripts) in the Flora of British India only states the type specimens as being collected in Tonglo and the Singalelah ranges, but not the collector's name. Both J. L. Lister and G. Watt collected P. listeri and material seems to have passed between Watt, King and Hooker. This is reflected in the confusing labelling on the herbarium sheets listed. Watt used the manuscript name P. robertiana for this species under collections 7105 and 6561 both which were then given under the name P. austrolisteri by Balfour.
