Type specimen: Fernald & Collins 243 resides at Harvard (GH) (specimens holotype GH00073514, GH00073516) and University of Minnesota (specimen MIN1002144) and Swedish Museum of Natural History (specimen S09-47161).
P. farinosa var. macropoda(syn): Fernald, not P. macropoda Craib Rhodora 9: 16. 1907. Type specimen: Fernald & Collins 243 resides as above.
P. mistassinica var. macropoda(syn): (Fernald) B. Boivin, Naturaliste Canad. 93: 644. 1966.
P. laurentiana f. chlorophylla: Fernald, Rhodora 30: 72. 1928. Type specimen: Fernald, Wiegand, Long, Gilbert & Hotchkiss 28,913 resides at Harvard (GH) (specimen not scanned). An efarinose form.
Epithet: Named for Laurentian (the vicinity of the St. Lawrence river).
Distribution: Eastern Canada, Maine USA.
An Eastern North American species closely related to P. incana but differing by distribution, robustness, flower size and by being octoploid. Usually farinose though sometimes efarinose with age, leaves oblanceolate to spathulate, with a broadly winged petiole. Flowers 3-12 per scape, homostylous, lavender, with saccate bracts.
