Primula hunanensis G.Hao, C.M.Hu & X.L.Yu

Type specimen: Y. Xu 140021 resides at South China Botanical Garden, Guangdong.

Epithet: Named for the province of Hunan.
Distribution: S Hunan, China.

A member of the Carolinella section, characterized by having a calyptrate capsule, opening by a lid. Similar to P. levicalyx in having pedicels and calyx glabrous but distinguished by P. hunanensis having a glabrous upper leaf surface, blade longer than the petioles and base broadly cuneate to subrounded. This is a shallow rooted, efarinose species with leaves basal, oblong to oblong-obovate, 4-8cm long, sparcely pilose along veins underneath, glabrous above, rouned at apex, broadly cuneate to subrounded at base. Petiole 1-3.5cm, sparcely pilose. Scape 2-4 per plant, 5.5-7cm with 3-7 pale-violet-pruple flowers rarely with a second whorl. Only known from the type location in Hunan, at Taipin village, Tongdao, Huaihua.
