Type specimen: J.D. Hooker & Thomson 25 resides at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimen E00024655) and Harvard (specimen 00073576) and KEW (specimen K000750243) and Paris (specimen P04567574).
P. hookeri var. violacea (W.W.Sm.): C.M.Hu, Fl. Reipubl. Popularis Sin. 59(2): 97 (1990). Type specimen: Ludlow & Sherriff 1734 resides at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimens E00024656, E00024657) and British Museum (specimen BM000996799). A purple variant.

P. vernicosa var. violacea (syn): W.W.Sm., Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh. 19: 214. 1937. Type specimen: Ludlow & Sherriff 1734 resides as above. A purple variant.
Epithet: Named for J. D. Hooker.
Distribution: Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, NE India, N Myanmar, SE Tibet (Xizang), Yunnan.
P. hookeri has a wide distribution from Yunnan through to Nepal. Flowers are usually white though they can be bluish violet in SE Tibet and are then deemed P. hookeri var. violacea. Scape obsolete at flowering, but to 30cm in fruit. Leaves develop a petiole at fruiting and leaf edges vary. Homostylous. P. bomiensis (only found at Bomi / Pome) is similar but has purple heterostylous flowers on short scapes.
