Type specimen: L.C.A. Chamisso, Sinus St. Laurentii, 1816-1817 resides at HAL (specimen HAL 0098445).

Epithet: Named for growing in cold regions of the arctic and subarctic.
Distribution: Canada: BC, NWT, Saskatchewan, Yukon. USA: Alaska. Russia: Chukotsk Penninsula.

The northernmost species in section Dodecatheon, it is distinguished by the elongated, usually woody, nearly horizontal caudex. Leaves ovate to oval, base slightly or obviously decurrent to the stem, abruptly tapering to the petiole, margin subentire to crenate-dentate, glabrous or minutely glandular-puberulent. Corolla pink or magenta to lavender (rarely white), tube white, with or without a maroon, thick, wavy ring, filaments distinct or slightly connate, maroon, anthers with pollen sacs usually maroon, connective black, smooth.
