Type specimen: X. Gong 02815 resides at Kunming Institute of Botany (specimen 1218836).

Epithet: Named for the calyptrate capsule.
Distribution: SE Yunnan, China.

This species is typical of section Carolinella species which are distinguished by the calyptrate capsule and has been compared with P. intanoensis, another Carolinella, but found in Thailand. P. calyptrata has a scape, purple flowers and purple under the leaves whereas P. intanoensis is stemless and has white flowers. P. calyptrata is efarinose, but leaves an calyx are densely covered in articulated hairs and the scape is villous. Leaves are arranged alternately (this is unusual) and are suborbicular, about 3cm, with a rounded apex and cordate base, color is purple below. Scape purple at flowering, 12-18cm with 1-2 whorls of 2-5 purple flowers with a yellow eye and hairy annulus.
