Type specimen: Delavay s.n. "rupibus madidis ad Tchen-fong-chen" #5016? resides at P (specimens P04571481, P04571485, P04571486).

Epithet: Named for the short scape.
Distribution: Yunnan, China.

A little known species, P. breviscapa is from the NE part of Yunnan where Yunnan meets Sichuan and Guizhou. Distinguished by the leaves which are elliptic to ovate-oblong, with multicellular hairs on the veins below but glabrous above, rounded at the apex, margin irregularly hydathode-dentate, base cuneate into a distinct petiole, equal to the blade and with multicellular hairs. Scape 5-8cm elongating in fruit to 18cm with tawny multicellular hairs. Pedicels 6-8mm sparsely pilose. Flowers violet, lobes deeply emarginate. See related P. dejuniana.
