Type specimen: Kingdon-Ward 511 resides at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimen E00024190).

Epithet: Named for the distinct prominent annulus of the flower.
Distribution: NW Yunnan, China.

P. annulata is endemic to NW Yunnan and was first collected in 1913 on a limestone peak near Deqin. It may not have been seen since.
