Type specimen: Ducloux 1619, Ducloux 6951 resides at Paris (specimens P04571337, P04571338) and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimens E00024264, E00024265).

P. flavicans (syn): Handel-Mazzetti in Kaiserl. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math.-Naturwiss. Kl., Anz. 61:131, 1924. Type specimen: Handel-Mazzetti 6241 resides at Vienna (specimen WU0061832) and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (specimen E00024266).

Epithet: Named for the bracts forming an involucre around the flowers.
Distribution: Yunnan, China.

P. ambita is related to P. obconica but has distinctive compact but subcapitular, secund umbels of yellow flowers at different stages of maturity and foliaceous bracts. See also P. pycnoloba.
