Monitors and Browsers

Technology is ever evolving. When I created this website, I used a monitor set at 640X480. Now my monitor won't even display a setting that small. So how large should I display the images on this website? Not everyone has the latest technology - the highest resolution monitors, the fastest computer, or the quickest internet connection. The most common screen resolution is 1024X768, followed by 1280X1024  and by far the most popular Browser is MSIE 6.x (see global stats).

Images and Resolution

Many of the images displayed on Primula World are limited in size by the size of the original picture sent to me, though larger originals have been sized smaller for display. It is difficult to go back and revisit hundreds of old pictures to resize them larger when technology changes. Therefore, I will now size all images to a maximum of 700X600. I will continue to use techniques in Photoshop to compress those images to an appropriate file size without compromising quality. Images for determining identification may be based on higher resolutions which are not displayed.

Cameras

Digital images photographed by me between 2001 and early 2004 were created using a digital Nikon Coolpix 995. In May 2004, I purchased a digital SLR Nikon D70. Combined with a Nikon Micro 55mm 1:28, extension tubes, and other lenses, I am able to take extreme close-ups of many key primula features. In the spring of 2006, I purchased a Nikon D200 and I now use this as my main camera.

Photogalleries

Generating the html code for the species gallery is time consuming with so many pictures on display. I am now using a modified version of JAlbum, ExhibitPlus skin to generate these pages.
